There are also many stories regarding why candles are lit on cakes during birthdays. Well, there is one theory that says it all started in ancient Greece. Greek people used to bake round cakes in order to worship Lord Artemis who was the goddess of the moon. The candles were lit on the cake to represent the glow of the moon. The smokes that were created used to take their wish and prayers to the god. There is other theory that says lighting candles on cakes started in Germany and it was done to represent the light of life.

At present, most western cultures celebrate birthdays with cake and then they light candles on it and sing a birthday song along with it. The number of candles usually represents the age of the person whose birthday is being celebrated. Many believe that one wish has to be made when one is blowing out all the candles in one breath. But it has to be a silent wish. If people came to know about it, then it will never become true.
