Today many people are going green. It sounds trendy, but in reality it is a great thing for our future and the future of our planet. Thankfully, those green conscience folks can carry that lifestyle with them even when on vacation. Newport Beach has some of the most stunning ecological landscapes, wildlife, and marine habitats in Southern California. The city has several programs in place to preserve the natural beauty of its oceans, parks, and Black Bay Preserve for generations to come. Newport Beach has over 25 miles of water, over 14 miles of land, 9 miles of coastline and sits 10 feet above sea level. It is a haven for nature lovers.
There are several green activities to enjoy while visiting Newport Beach. Newport Harbor is well known as one of the best, albeit smallest, yacht harbors. It’s surrounded by bluffs, beaches, coves, and plenty of small islands. Quiet bay beaches line its shores and two jetties guard the entrance into the harbor. Over 9,000 ships of all shapes and sizes can be docked there at any given time. The greenest of activities to be found in the Harbor is kayaking. This makes an exciting, exhilarating day trip.
In the Crystal Cove Historic District you’ll find a beautiful 12.3 acre State Park and gorgeous vintage style beach architecture. If you are looking for vacation rentals in Newport Beach, look no further. You can rent one of the retro 1930’s cottages that have been restored back to their original glory. El Moro Canyon is found in the back end of Crystal Cove State park. This area is popular with campers due to the availability of hiking, horseback riding, and mountain biking. Year round you can hike and find wildflowers, ocean views, and canyons to explore.
Upper Newport Bay is one of the few remaining estuaries in Southern California. You will find the area, where salt and fresh water meet and mix, to be quite peaceful. There is a nature preserve and an ecological reserve which offers over 1,000 acres of fresh air and open space. This area is great for bird watching due to the almost 200 species of birds and the Pacific Flyway involving the migrating birds. For the avid birdwatcher, there are six endangered species that can be seen here: the Light Footed Clapper Rail, Brown Pelican, Belding’s Savannah Sparrow, Black Rail, Peregrine Falcon and California Least Tern.
There are also many gardens, and a library where you can learn more about the history and conservation efforts of Newport Beach. No visit to this town is complete without a stop at the Back Bay Science Center or the Peter & Mary Interpretive Center.
Newport Beach has great appeal for the green among us and plenty of eco-friendly activities for its visitors to enjoy.
