How To Maintain Your Sanity When You Retire! Top 5 Tips&Hellip;

Are you about to retire? Retirement is one of those things that we all have to go through, however it’s also a great opportunity to do what you’ve been putting off! So, what should you don your retirement? Well, I’m not about to tell you that, simply because I know nothing about you, that said I can certainly give you some ideas (I am a retiree myself after all!).

Have you thought about volunteering? If not, why not? Volunteering was one of the most fulfilling things I did during my retirement – I actually worked at a local school for two hours every afternoon. There are so many options when it comes to choosing a volunteer position that it can actually be a bit overwhelming – just start slow. Test the water a little bit and try out a few options. What’s more, you do not need to look for volunteering options in and around what you did for a career – you have far more transferrable skills than you can possibly imagine!

What about downsizing? A lot of retirees, particularly couples, get to the stage of looking to a new property – after all, do you really need that five bedroom mansion? It’s most likely that you already have equity in your house, so why not leverage it and use it to either enjoy your retirement or for more purposeful activities? Secondly, bigger properties are obviously more difficult to maintain, so not only will it give you a bit of a cash boost, but it will also save you a lot of time, too.

How about starting a business? Going back into the workplace is probably the last thing you want to be doing after you retire, however for a lot of people or companies it is often a necessity. I was never particularly fond of technology, however about five years before I retired I started studying internet marketing, and to this day I’m still heavily involved with it. Not only does it keep your brain active, but it can also generate some much needed extra cash in your pocket, even at a relatively low level – from my own personal experience, starting a business was one of the best decisions I ever made.

Lastly, how about getting involved in politics? A lot of retirees often find that politics is a natural avenue to channel their experience – how often do you see senior citizens manning polling stations when you go to vote? If you want to go a step further, you can also get involved with a local candidate – while you may begin working at a relatively low level i.e. making phone calls or distributing flyers, getting involved can certainly give you a strong sense of worth.

Whatever you decide to do in your retirement just make sure you are actually doing something – the last thing you want to do when you retire is sit in the house all day (well, at least in the long run!).
