Losing A Loved One

Losing someone we love can come as a shock and can be especially distressing if their death was unexpected.  The pain we feel is undoubtedly one of the deepest and strongest pain that we have ever had to deal with in our lifetime and for many people carrying on with everyday life can seem an upward struggle. Whether we lose a partner, spouse, parent or child losing someone we loved and spent a lot of time with can be heart breaking. It may be due to illness, an accident that has cruelly taken our beloved or even old age but losing someone we loved is extremely painful.

How We Can Overcome Our Grief
Although there are a number of articles and books written which can help us understand the feelings we are experiencing many of us feel extreme remorse and feel like we will never get over our loss. Talking with other members of the family who are also experiencing grief can help. It may be that some relatives can carry on with normal everyday life whereas you may find it too difficult. It is important that you understand that people get over grief in different ways and some quicker than others. It does not mean that they did not care. It is simply that grief is dealt with differently.

Sharing happy memories of the deceased is undoubtedly a good way to get over our pain. Talk with other grieving family members and share antidotes and funny stories from the past. You may even surprise yourself by having a giggle or two at what they got up to. It is important that you celebrate their life and not feel sad. The last thing the deceased would want is for you to feel sad and cry so bear this in mind and although it may seem hard try to carry on with normal everyday life as soon as you can.

Getting On With Our Lives
Following their death you may not even feel like getting out of bed in the morning but by resuming normal routines and remembering the deceased fondly you will soon start to feel better. Many people find solace in placing a table of remembrance full of photos of the deceased in their homes whereas others find it better to remove photos so they are not constantly reminded of their loss.

Remember that even though at the time you may feel extremely sad at your loss, there is a light at the end of the tunnel and eventually life will resume as normal although the deceased will never be forgotten.
