What are Bed Bugs?

Bed bugs are tiny insects. They are also known as a parasite which means insects which feed on other’s blood. Bed bugs feed on warm blood of animals and human beings by sucking their blood with their tubes.

Where Bed Bugs are Found?

There are almost 99 species of bed bugs which are found all over world. However, the most common bed bug which is found everywhere is known as Cimex lectularius. It is also the most infamous species of the family and prefers to feed on human blood.

Apart from the houses of human beings, bed bugs are also found in hotels, movie theatres, hostels etc. They hide in the cracks of your furniture, under your bed, in the screw holes, under your carpet etc. They are also found in hotel rooms. In hotel rooms their common places to hide are mattress seams, sofas, chairs, behind the headboard etc. You will be surprised to know that they can be found in fashion stores also.

Recently, bed bugs have been found in various popular retail stores, especially in dressing rooms. Hence while you are trying on potential new items, try hanging your dress on the hooks rather then laying them across the cushioned seats or on the carpeted floors.

Bed bugs are also found in offices and many offices have been shut down due to bed bugs infestations. Therefore, if you are the owner of your office, keep it pest free and if you work in any office where bed bugs can be found, bring it to your management’s knowledge and try to get rid of bed bugs as soon as possible. 

How Bed Bugs Bite Human Beings?

When you sleep at night, they get out from their hiding places and crawl towards you. They pierce two tubes in your skin but you don’t feel the pain (as you feel when mosquitoes bite you) because of bed bugs’ unique feature. Through one of their tubes, they send anesthesia through their saliva, so you don’t feel the pain and through other tube they suck your blood.

What Are the Symptoms of Bed Bugs Bite?

Generally bed bugs bite does not show any symptoms. But itching, redness of skin, etc. are observed on your skin, they could be the symptoms of bed bugs bite.

What are the Treatments Required for Bed Bugs Bite?

When mosquitoes bite you, do you need any treatment? No, until they cause you diseases such as dengue, malaria etc. Same is the case with bed bugs bite. Usually you do not need any treatment if bed bugs bite you. However, you can use oral antihistamine if the problem gets severe after bed bugs bite. In some cases steroid creams also work as bed bugs bite treatment. If bacterial infection develops due to scratching, you would need antibiotics to stop the spread of infection and to heal your skin.

Whenever you notice bed bugs in your house or office, try to get rid of them as soon as possible.
