The United States boasts some of the world’s best fishing spots. Many of these ideal places feature a variety of fish to catch and are suitable for avid and recreational fishers. Here are some of the nation’s best fishing spots and how you can access them.
Devils Lake
This fishing hotspot in North Dakota is where many people go to try to catch fish like the northern pike, crappie and white bass. Walleye fish are also plentiful in these waters. If you want to reach the pier at Channel A, drive west on Highway 2, turn right on 75th Avenue NE and turn right again on 54th Street NE. Lakewood Beach at Creel Beach can be reached by traveling three miles south of Devils Lake along Highway 20 to 45th Street, two miles west on Burke Boulevard and a half a mile north to the paved access road at Lakewood Park.
Mid Channel Bank
Located in Washington state’s Puget Sound near Port Townsend, Mid Channel Bank is known for its abundance of Chinook salmon. During the summer, these fish are known to migrate south through the channel. Mid Channel Bank is situated specifically north of Marrowstone Island and encompasses an area northward toward Point Wilson on the Port Townsend Peninsula. Fishing charters can be arranged from Port Townsend to access Mid Channel Bank.
Charlotte Harbor
Florida’s Charlotte Harbor is a large open-water estuary where freshwater and saltwater fish can be found. Redfish, barracuda and grouper are just some of the offerings here. You can also try fishing for cobia and tarpon during your time in a boat on the harbor. Highway 41 includes a bridge that links the city of Charlotte Harbor to Punta Gorda, and the exits near the bridge will take you to some of the best fishing spots along the harbor. Access points to the harbor can also be found near Ponce de Leon Park and Charlotte Harbor Preserve State Park.
Toledo Bend Reservoir
You can find this reservoir straddled across the Texas-Louisiana state line with its dam being located about 24 miles northeast of Jasper in Newton County. The Sabine River Authority of Texas Toledo Bend Division’s office, which is located at the dam, offers general maps of the area to make navigating around the reservoir easier. The reservoir is an excellent source for largemouth bass and sunfish. Catfish, crappie and striped bass can also be caught here. Route 139 off of Texas State Highway 87 and Frontier Drive off of Highway 21 offer easy access to the reservoir.
